You have just been promoted, and you are excited. You have worked hard at your craft to achieve this goal. But…. You are also feeling nervous about the pressure to perform, meet team targets and influence your team members.

Using the influential leader model, we can assist you to get through onboarding your team to become an influential and successful leader.

1) Clarity

Good leaders have the clarity and direction of knowing where their team are going and how they going to get there.

Thus, a visionary leader will inspire the team.

Do you currently have a personal career vision?

Do you know your organisations vision?

Now is the perfect opportunity for you to create a new team vision with a team bonding experience, like our Mindset for Teams program which aligns your teams’ personal values and goals to the overall company vision.

2) Self-Awareness

A critical step in building your Emotional Intelligence (EI).

Here ask yourself, what type of leader are you?

By understanding what type of Leader you are and who is needed at this time to “Lead” rather than “manage” this team.

To properly onboard your new team and create a sense of team culture it is going to need a plan, time, and team mustering.

You will require empathy, certainty, direction, and inspiration.

3) Prepare

By understanding your team’s communication style, strengths, role, and their future role will put you in a good position to begin to become the leader of the team.

Recognising how best to communicate, motivate and inspire your new team. Set up a plan on how you will nurture them, reward them, and set time regularly to coach them.

To assist you with the plan, start with a survey to discover what is important to them, leadership assessments are a good way for you to begin to understand your team members' personality profile, coaching, and management requirements and to develop a growth plan along with them. Building Trust.

4) Rapport

People do business with people they like, know and trust. I am sure we have all heard this before.

But how does this relate to your team?

Teams perform better for managers who display leadership that they like, know, and trust.

They're going to give you their best and the quickest way to get someone to like you is to build rapport.

There are many techniques for building rapport in person with body language and facial expressions, but in today’s remote work from home, it’s very much different. You will need to be able to build rapport remotely.

5) Social Regulation

Is being able to manage relationships and build networks.

Being able to induce the responses in others.

People with strong Social Regulation have tactics of persuasion, convincing, and negotiation skills.

Competencies include communication, conflict management, leadership, influence, and collaboration.

To be a change catalyst and have a positive impact on each situation you are involved in.

The best way for you to be proficient in Social Regulation is for you to speak your team’s language*. Being aware of your own communication style is important but generally being able to alter the delivery method and the words you use; will help you achieve greater Social Regulation. Your role is to be seen as approachable, positive, read emotional tones and situations easily, communicate and connect with others as well as satisfy the various interests in the team.

*Language refers to the profile behaviour of a person.
